Glass Towers Lean Across a Curved Silver Surface
Chicago’s buildings become unexpectedly fluid when they pass through the surface of the Bean. In this colour photograph, blue sky opens across the left side while reflected towers rise along a steep diagonal. I concentrated on a small portion of Cloud Gate, letting its polished curve turn familiar architecture into something less predictable.
The sculpture itself is almost hidden by what it reflects. A broad, silvery band sweeps upward through the frame, carrying pale clouds and the outlines of buildings. Rows of windows remain sharply recognizable, yet their angles no longer behave quite as they would in a straightforward city view. Tall, narrow forms lean beside a broader facade, and dark sections give the lighter buildings a firm edge.
I wanted the photograph to sit between an architectural study and an abstract image. There is enough detail to recognize the city, but no broad view of the park or crowds to explain the scene immediately. Instead, the eye follows the meeting of blue sky, reflected glass and the sculpture’s curved surface. The diagonal composition makes that boundary feel active rather than simply decorative.
Photographed in 2011, this is my close look at the relationship between Chicago’s skyline and Cloud Gate. The clear blue and restrained building colours keep the image open and bright. For a buyer drawn to urban geometry, architectural reflections or an unusual view of a familiar landmark, it offers the city through its own distorted mirror.
