Small Dark Figures Within Broad Bands Of Water
Three distant brown bears appear as small dark shapes across the tidal flats in this Alaska photograph. Most of the frame belongs to water, wet ground and reflected light. I made the image in 2011, and what holds my attention is the scale of the setting around the animals rather than the detail of an individual bear.
The bears occupy a narrow band below the horizon. Two are closer together toward the middle, with another farther left. Their silhouettes remain distinct against the lighter surface, but they are too far away for facial detail. I like that distance within the composition: it lets the animals become part of the coastal landscape while still giving the eye something particular to find.
Horizontal areas of bright and dark water run through the middle of the image. Farther out, sunlight breaks into many small highlights, while the near foreground has a finer, more even texture. Muted grey, olive and brown tones keep the colour restrained. A shallow strip of sky sits above the sea, giving the scene a simple upper boundary.
There are no foreground trees or plants competing with the reflective surface. The open space is essential to how the photograph reads, allowing the small bears to suggest the breadth of the coast. This is a wildlife landscape that rewards a second look: first the light across the flats, then the animals within it. As a print, it offers a spacious Alaskan coastal view with a subtle wildlife presence and an understated palette.
