Playful Boy at an Indian Train Window Monochrome Photography

Bright Eyes and Small Hands Framed by Metal Bars

The boy made the train window his own small stage. His face sits between two vertical bars, with another crossing his mouth and both hands gripping the lower rail. I photographed this encounter in India in 2010, using black and white to bring his expression and the worn metal into focus.

The train was stopped when I made the portrait at close range. He saw me and responded to the camera, holding the expression just long enough for the window's geometry to settle around him. The directness of that exchange is what I value here. His eyes meet the lens, while his hands make the rigid frame feel unexpectedly playful.

Look closely at his eyes and the reflections preserve something of the scene outside the carriage, including my position as I took the photograph. I considered whether that detail might distract, but kept it as another part of the encounter. The photographer remains visible within the portrait rather than disappearing from it.

The surrounding darkness keeps attention on his face and hands. Chipped paint on the rails supplies a rougher texture, and the slight differences between the two sides prevent the nearly symmetrical composition from becoming stiff. For me, the photograph brings structure and spontaneity together in one brief meeting. It offers a strong human presence for a study, hallway or living room, with small details that become clearer on a closer look.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
