Green and Yellow Detail on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway
It was the colour that made me stop. Not the whole train, not the landscape around it, but this tight section of green and yellow metal with its repeating vents, hinges, handles and years of wear.
I photographed this train in Coonoor, India, in 2009 while travelling through the Nilgiri Hills. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is one of the defining sights of the region, but I was more interested here in moving closer and isolating a small piece of the carriage. Once separated from the rest of the train, the surface becomes almost abstract.
The saturated green dominates the frame, interrupted by a single horizontal band of yellow running through the centre. Rows of louvred panels repeat across the metalwork, creating a strong pattern, while chipped paint, scratches and uneven surfaces prevent the geometry from becoming too perfect. Those small imperfections are important to me. They give the photograph its character.
I often find that the most memorable part of a place is not necessarily the grand view. Sometimes it is a colour, a texture or an ordinary detail that becomes far more interesting when removed from its surroundings.
That is what happened here. Up close, this railway carriage stopped being simply transportation and became a composition of colour, repetition and age—a small fragment of India that carried its own visual identity.
