Weathered Prairie Architecture Beneath a Wide, Cloud-Streaked Sky

The elevator rises above everything around it. Against the low Saskatchewan horizon, its tall wooden form interrupts a landscape of grasses, distant trees, and open sky. I was drawn to that contrast while travelling the province’s backroads: a building with strong vertical lines surrounded by land that seems to stretch outward in every direction.

In this black and white photograph, the worn siding becomes a pattern of pale streaks and dark seams. The upper section sits above a larger rectangular body, while the lower adjoining structure extends toward the right. Its exposed end reveals a grid of framing that contrasts with the tightly spaced boards on the tower. Each part of the building has its own rhythm.

The rail line crosses the foreground at a shallow angle, giving the composition a horizontal base. Beyond it, grasses gather around the elevator, softening the hard edges of the walls. A utility pole and a few trees provide smaller vertical accents without challenging the scale of the main structure.

I kept plenty of sky in the frame. Wispy cloud bands spread above the roof, with smaller clouds closer to the horizon. Those layers give the scene depth and balance the dense texture of the wood below.

What interested me was how clearly the structure still holds its shape despite its weathered surface. In monochrome, I could concentrate on that relationship between form and texture, and on the contrast between the angular building and the softer prairie landscape.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
