Australian Rail Yard Trains From Above Black and White Photography
Parallel Carriage Roofs and Repeated Fans Form Strong Diagonals
Rows of trains become a pattern when seen from above. In this Australian rail yard, carriage roofs run diagonally through the frame, with windows, vents, and circular fans repeating along their length. I used black and white to concentrate on those lines and the differences between the adjoining trains.
There is little open space in the composition. The roofs extend beyond the edges, so the yard feels larger than the section shown. Narrow gaps reveal gravel and track between the carriages, while an uncovered line on the right adds a simpler rhythm of rails and sleepers. That contrast gives the dense arrangement a useful boundary.
I was interested in how practical equipment can create an almost abstract image. One roof has broad rounded panels and a softly mottled surface; another carries a much busier sequence of fans and grilles. Repeated windows along the sides add finer divisions. The photograph leaves those functional details recognizable, even as their arrangement becomes the main visual subject.
The elevated viewpoint also changes the character of a familiar transport scene. The trains are presented through their surfaces and spacing, with no platform crowd or locomotive front to establish a conventional portrait. For a railway enthusiast, there is plenty of equipment to examine. For me, the appeal lies in the measured repetition, the diagonal movement, and the small variations that keep each row from reading exactly like its neighbour.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
