Folding Mirror And Period Fixtures In A Spanish Washroom

I photographed this unusual bathroom interior inside a Gaudí-designed building in Spain. What caught my attention was not the room as a whole, but the elaborate folding mirror standing almost like a small mechanical sculpture beside the bathtub. Its hinged rectangular panels, narrow metal frames, pedestal, circular tray, and small metal instruments immediately gave the washroom a character that felt far removed from anything contemporary.

The photograph sits naturally within my retro interior wall art because so much of its visual interest comes from objects and fixtures that belong to another design era. The central mirror is sharp enough to reveal its construction and worn surfaces, while the bathroom beyond it gradually falls out of focus. A toilet, bathtub, faucets, tiled floor, and additional reflective surfaces remain recognizable without competing with the main subject.

I chose black and white for this photograph because color would have distracted from what interested me most: shape, metal, glass, reflection, and the strange geometry created by the overlapping mirror panels. The hinged sections break the frame into smaller rectangles and angled lines, while the circular tray beneath them introduces a completely different form. Even the reflections refuse to behave conventionally. Parts of the washroom appear, disappear, and become fragmented across the separate pieces of glass.

I made the photograph while visiting the building in Spain, and it is exactly the sort of detail I tend to notice when I am exploring architecture. Famous buildings are usually photographed from the outside, yet sometimes a small interior object says more about the personality of a place than another photograph of the facade.

This photograph is offered as a limited edition of only 10 prints. I personally sign each print, and every one includes a certificate of authenticity. It is printed with archival pigment inks on premium archival paper, preserving the subtle tonal separation in the metalwork, glass, white porcelain fixtures, and softer background.

For me, the photograph works particularly well in interiors that already incorporate vintage furnishings, industrial details, unusual architectural objects, or restrained black-and-white artwork. It may also appeal to collectors who enjoy discovering overlooked details within historic spaces and photographs carrying the visual character of nostalgic photographic wall art.
