Old Quebec Dormer Window and Metal Roof Black and White Architectural Photography

Reflected Light Across Overlapping Panels And Diagonal Rooflines

I had walked past this Old Quebec building several times before the morning light on its roof drew me in. The dormer window was a quiet subject, but the reflections around it made the view worth a closer look. I photographed the detail in 2014, bringing the window, overlapping panels and sloping roof into a single vertical composition.

The dormer sits toward the lower left, its triangular top rising against a larger field of rectangular metal panels. Two tall window sections contain smaller panes, creating a fine grid inside the broader roof pattern. The roof below runs diagonally through the frame, giving those upright window lines a contrasting direction. A small brick chimney appears at the left edge, adding a rougher surface among the smoother ones.

Light is the element that changes the scene. Pale, wavering shapes fall across the metal, softening the straight seams and repeated rectangles. I found those reflections absorbing because they gave a solid architectural surface a nearly watery appearance. The window stays dark enough to remain distinct, while the surrounding panels shimmer in different shades of grey.

Black and white brings out the relationship between structure and light. For me, this photograph is a reminder of how much there is to notice in a modest building detail. It offers Quebec architecture through one window and the surfaces around it, with a composition that rewards looking beyond the first recognizable shape. It would suit an interest in dormers, roof geometry or monochrome photographs with subtle changes of texture.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
