Golden Green Skin Against Dark Water and Glossy Foliage

A bullfrog sits among small floating leaves in this overhead photograph from Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario. Its yellow-green back and folded hind legs stand out against the dark water, while glossy leaves surround it in an uneven pattern. My view keeps the frog slightly left of centre, leaving space for the water and foliage to remain part of the subject.

I like the way the colours connect the animal to its surroundings. The frog shares greens and warm yellow tones with the leaves, but its broader shape separates it from their smaller ovals. A bright eye and the curve of its head provide clear details near the centre of the image. Some leaves are fresh green; others have brown edges or small damaged areas.

The dark gaps in the water give the composition depth. Stems remain faintly visible below the surface in places, while reflected light makes a few leaves particularly bright. That mix of visible and partly hidden detail keeps the photograph from becoming a flat pattern. Looking down allows the animal’s shape and the arrangement around it to be seen together.

This colour nature print would suit someone who enjoys pond life and the smaller subjects found in Ontario’s parks. The frog gives the eye an immediate place to settle, and the surrounding leaves reward a longer look. It is a close, detailed view of the natural scene I photographed in 2013, with the water providing a dark backdrop to its varied greens.
