A Small Meltwater Pond Beneath Sculpted Snowbanks
Snow takes on a substantial shape in this photograph from the Bugaboo Mountains of British Columbia. I was drawn to the high, cut edge above a small meltwater pond, where a bright upper surface drops into a darker vertical face. The water below follows its own curved outline along the bare ground. Together, they give the scene a series of changing edges rather than one continuous slope.
I kept the snow close in the foreground, where small hollows and ridges remain visible across its surface. Farther into the view, the bank becomes steeper, with an overhanging section and deep shadow beneath it. The pond is darker and comparatively smooth, so its shape stands out against both the pale snow and the rough stony ground to the right. A small exposed patch of rock interrupts another snowbank beyond it. That detail helps connect the nearer forms to the less prominent slopes behind them.
The clouds are a strong part of this image too. They fill much of the upper view, carrying bright edges and darker undersides above the low ridge. In black and white, the clouds, snow and water each occupy a different range of tones. I wanted the photograph to hold all three without losing the smaller textures near the camera. Looking back at it, I follow the pond’s outline first, then the snowbank rising above it, and finally the open sky. The mountain setting comes through these close surfaces and the space around them.
