Algonquin Autumn Foliage and Bare Trees Reflected in Water Colour Photography
Orange Forest Canopy Above Slender Trunks and Soft Reflections
Orange and red foliage forms a bright band across the upper half of this Algonquin scene. Below it, a row of slender bare trunks stands at the water’s edge, with the colours returning as softer vertical reflections. I photographed this view in 2021, interested in the contrast between the dense autumn canopy and the much finer lines in front of it.
The stillness of the water gave me a feeling of calm as I stood there. At the same time, the bare trees added something less settled to the scene, their narrow branches cutting across the colour behind them. I wanted both impressions to remain in the photograph. The image is warm and vivid, but its structure depends on more than the leaves alone.
Dark evergreen patches break up the oranges, and small horizontal marks interrupt the reflected trunks. I like how those details keep the two halves from becoming a perfect mirror. The forest above is crisp and busy, while the water gathers its shapes into longer, softer strokes. Keeping the sky outside the frame lets the colour and pattern continue from edge to edge.
This horizontal photograph would bring a strong autumn presence to a living room, cabin or workspace. It could sit comfortably with wood and warm neutral colours, or offer a seasonal accent in a simpler room. The broad canopy catches attention first, with the slender trunks and reflections giving the eye more to explore afterward.
