White Passenger Boats Reflect Beside a Line of Gabled Buildings

Walking beside the water in Gdansk, Poland, I found these tour boats lined up against the waterfront buildings. I photographed the scene in black and white, with the nearest white vessel filling the left foreground and the river opening out to the right. Their reflections give the busy architecture a quieter counterpart below.

I like how the boats lead into the distance. The closest one has a clear arrangement of windows, railings and lettering, while the vessels beyond become smaller, carrying the eye towards the far waterfront. The slight diagonal of their moorings makes the scene feel open rather than compressed against the bank.

Behind them, steep roofs, gables and a narrow spire form a varied skyline. The facades repeat rows of windows, but their different outlines keep the buildings distinct. I wanted those details to remain part of the photograph because the boats belong to this particular city setting, not just to a general view of water.

The river holds softer versions of the same shapes. Small ripples break the reflections without losing the broad white hulls and dark rooflines. In monochrome, that relationship between solid detail and moving reflection becomes the centre of the image. As a horizontal print, it offers a restrained waterfront scene for someone drawn to boats or European cities. What stays with me is the way the quiet water brings the vessels and architecture together, allowing each to have a second, less definite form beneath the shore.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
