Gdańsk Waterfront Gabled Buildings in Black and White Photography

Changing Roof Shapes Rise Above the Stone Lined Quay

Every roof seems to have its own outline along this part of the waterfront. In Gdańsk, Poland, I photographed the closely spaced buildings across the river, using black and white to bring their different heights, windows and gables into one clear view. A tower at the left gives the row a taller starting point before the smaller roof shapes take over.

I waited for a quiet moment on the water, when passing boats and movement would not interrupt the view. The reflections here are a subtle strip beneath the quay rather than a full mirror of the buildings. I like that proportion. It keeps the architecture as the main subject while still showing the river that connects the whole frontage.

The street level has a different rhythm from the upper floors. Awnings, windows and shopfront details create a low band of activity beneath the more varied façades. Above, some gables are simple and angular; others have curved or stepped edges. The pale sky gives each outline enough space to remain distinct.

My interest is in the row as a whole, with its small changes of shape and tone. Monochrome holds the different surfaces together without flattening their character. This print brings a detailed European waterfront into a room, offering a sense of place through architecture rather than a distant skyline. It is a view I can follow slowly, from one roof and window pattern to the next.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
