Gdańsk Waterfront Architecture in Black and White Photography
Rows of Arched Windows Beneath a Steep Tiled Roof
There is a satisfying rhythm to this waterfront façade. At Hotel Królewski in Gdańsk, Poland, I faced the building across the water and let its repeated arched windows carry the photograph. Black and white keeps the attention on brickwork, shape and proportion, with a pale sky giving the steep roof a clear outline.
The windows are small compared with the broad wall, yet their spacing is what makes the view feel ordered. Three upper rows establish a steady pattern before the larger openings at water level change the pace. Above them, dormers rise from the tiled roof in another sequence, slightly offset from the lines below.
I wanted enough space around the building to show how it sits on the waterfront. A modern structure at the left and smaller buildings to the right keep it within the city, while the short strip of water in front gives the façade a little breathing room. Its reflections are broken by ripples, softening the otherwise firm horizontal edge.
The photograph rewards both a distant and a close view. From farther away, the roof and wall read as simple shapes. Up close, the individual bricks and window surrounds become more noticeable. I like that change in scale, especially in architecture that has such a strong repeated pattern. This print brings a calm urban structure to a room, with the water adding a softer counterpoint to the masonry.
