Three Lettered Signs Above A Door And Flower Boxes

“Pizzeria,” “Napoli” and “Restaurant” divide the centre of this Gdansk facade into three clear sections. Below them, a narrow door sits between two windows, with menu boards and flower boxes along the pavement. I photographed the storefront on Długi in 2013. The arrangement brings everyday restaurant details together with a much more elaborate building frontage.

What drew me to the scene was the relationship between those two scales. The upper facade has repeated windows, decorative circular motifs and strong horizontal bands. Closer to street level, the signs, lamps and written menus make the building more personal and particular. I enjoy how much information fits within a view that still has a clear, balanced structure.

Black and white puts the lettering and architectural edges into focus. The dark framed signs stand apart from the lighter wall, while the central door gives the lower half a strong vertical line. Flowers soften the base of the windows, and the paving adds a final layer of small repeated shapes across the bottom. There are plenty of details to examine without losing the rhythm of the three-part frontage.

For a wall, I see this photograph offering a close view of a Polish street rather than a distant city skyline. It would appeal to someone interested in Gdansk, restaurant facades or monochrome architectural photography. My favourite aspect is the way the building remains formal above while its lower portion records the practical, welcoming details of a particular storefront at the time I photographed it.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
