Dark Animals Across Pale Ground Below a Dry Hillside
The herd is the centre of this photograph of a Tibetan yak ranch in China. Many dark animals occupy the pale ground, with a few lighter ones among them. I framed the scene without sky, keeping the yaks, a small building and the dry slope together. Their different shapes and positions make the view more varied than it first appears.
Some animals have their heads lowered, while others stand facing across the yard or toward the camera. Several overlap, and others are separated by open patches of ground. I like the way those spaces let me follow individual forms within the larger herd. The long coats create uneven dark edges against the much lighter earth.
Behind the animals, low walls define an enclosure around a modest pale building. A dark window and doorway give it a simple face within the scene. Beyond that, scattered shrubs mark the hillside in small irregular groups. I kept the slope in the photograph because it connects the ranch yard to the wider terrain without turning the animals into distant details.
The colour stays close to the land: muted browns, pale sandy tones and the darker coats of the herd. For me, the picture’s interest lies in that restrained setting and the variety within it. The animals, building and walls all remain distinct, but none is isolated from the ground around it. I wanted to retain that ordinary relationship between a herd and the rural space it occupies.
