Woman Beneath a Hue Mausoleum Arch Monochrome Photography
Light Reaches a Figure Beyond the Rounded Archway
The arch is large, but the woman beyond it holds my attention. Inside Dong Khanh Mausoleum in Hue, Vietnam, I found a view where light picked out her profile, conical hat and long ao dai against the darker interior. I made this black and white photograph during my 2026 travels through the country.
The rounded opening gives the image its main structure. I kept its pale edges and the steps below within the frame, allowing the viewer to look through into a second space. Beyond the arch, heavy wooden doors create a more angular arrangement around the woman's figure. Her raised hand introduces a small movement within those solid forms.
Natural light reaches her clothing and the floor near her feet, while much of the surrounding room remains in shadow. During the trip, I kept noticing the difference between bright exteriors and dark interiors like this one. Here, that change in light makes the woman visible without separating her from the architecture.
I wanted to retain both the scale of the doorway and the detail of the encounter. She occupies only a small portion of the photograph, yet the light and her profile give her a clear presence. Monochrome brings the worn surfaces, stone floor and fabric into the same quiet tonal range. The result is a portrait within a place, with the arch guiding the eye toward the person rather than becoming the whole subject.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
