Venice Boy Beside a Football Black and White Street Photography
A Small Figure Within a Broad Stone Paved Square
A boy sits beside his football in a broad paved space, with a brick wall filling the background. I photographed this quiet Venice scene in 2005. The small figure became the centre of the composition, held between the wide foreground and the varied surfaces of the buildings behind him. His turned back and seated posture give the moment a simple, unhurried presence.
The football’s pale surface and dark patches make it immediately visible beside him. Around that small pair of shapes, the paving spreads out in rectangles of different sizes. I like how their joints lead towards the boy without forming a single obvious path. The stone has its own changes in tone and texture, adding detail throughout the otherwise open ground.
Behind him, a closed doorway and a dark window sit within pale frames. A bricked-up opening on the left adds another rectangle to the wall. Those architectural shapes balance the irregular pattern of the brickwork, giving the background both structure and age.
Black and white keeps the scene closely tied to its light, surfaces and proportions. For me, the photograph holds a small human moment within a much larger setting, with the football providing a familiar point of connection. As a print, it brings a quiet view of Venetian daily life into focus. The open paving gives the central figure room, while the wall offers enough detail to keep the eye moving through the image.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
