Washington Breadline Sculpture Black and White Memorial Photography
Five Bronze Figures Queue Beside a Textured Wall and Door
Walking through the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial in Washington, DC, I stopped in front of the breadline sculpture. Five bronze figures stand in a row beside a textured wall, facing a closed door. I photographed them in black and white, concentrating on the repeated coats and hats and the small differences between their poses.
The line is orderly, but the figures are not identical. Their heads tilt at different angles, their coats fall to different lengths, and their hands rest in pockets or close to the body. I moved slowly while framing the view so those details could remain separate, even within the strong repetition of the group.
Soft, overcast light brought out the surfaces without making the highlights too sharp. The bronze carries irregular folds and marks, while the wall behind it forms a denser horizontal texture. At the right, the door’s broad rectangular panels give the row a clear destination. The paving below keeps the full figures visible down to their shoes.
What held my attention was the stillness created by the sculpture. The men are shaped as if waiting, yet every fold and gesture is fixed in place. In the photograph, I wanted to leave enough space for that quiet observation. The monochrome treatment connects figures, wall and doorway through tone, allowing their different textures and postures to carry the scene without distraction.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
