Crossed White Straps Beneath Raised Muskets and Smoke

Smoke fills the space above the formation, while raised muskets cut across it in overlapping lines. I photographed this War of 1812 reenactment in 2012 from behind the participants, where the uniforms and equipment create a strong pattern beneath the less definite shapes of the smoke.

The white straps are the first details I notice in the lower part of the image. They cross the dark red coats in broad diagonals, repeating from one figure to the next. Tall hats and plumes add another sequence of upright shapes, while the musket barrels point through the lighter area above. The restrained colour keeps the red visible without allowing it to overpower the scene.

My viewpoint makes the arrangement more important than individual expressions. Faces are largely hidden, so the photograph depends on backs, shoulders, equipment and the space between the participants. I find that useful here: the smoke becomes part of the structure of the image, hiding some details and leaving others sharply outlined.

I wanted to preserve the visual moment of the volley rather than imply that this was an original wartime scene. The reenactment context matters, and the photograph records a modern event representing an earlier period. For someone interested in military history or living history events, it offers a detailed view of the formation, with the repeated straps and raised weapons set against an immediate, shifting cloud of smoke.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
