Folded Arms And A Small Smile Against Deep Shadows
A small smile and folded arms give this Havana portrait its immediate presence. I photographed the woman facing my camera, with her headwrap and pale outer shirt standing out against the darker surroundings. The black and white treatment keeps the image centred on her expression, posture and the fine detail of her face.
I am drawn to the directness of her eyes. The smile is slight, with nothing exaggerated about it, and the fabric around her head frames the face clearly. Lines across her forehead and beside her eyes remain visible. I wanted those details to be part of the encounter rather than smoothed into a more general likeness.
Her crossed forearms form a second strong shape below the face. The hands, sleeves and layered clothing bring different textures into the frame, while the light shirt connects them through a broad area of pale tone. Behind her, blurred architectural shapes and a chair retain a sense of place without becoming competing subjects.
The photograph holds my attention because the person remains so clearly present within a quiet composition. From a distance, the face and folded-arm posture are easy to read; closer viewing adds the skin and fabric details. For me, its character comes from that combination of direct eye contact and an unhurried-looking pose, with the Havana setting still quietly visible around her.
