Matching Uniforms And Individual Gestures Between Concrete Walls
The uniforms match, but the boys’ gestures make each one distinct. I photographed these schoolboys at an entrance in Kochi, India, keeping the tall student and the younger boy beside him at the front of the frame. More faces appear behind them through the opening, giving the black and white image several layers of attention.
The younger boy leans against the wall with one hand at his hip. The taller boy stands upright, his loose tie and open collar interrupting the neat pattern of white shirts and dark trousers. Their sideways glances draw attention beyond the frame, while some of the boys farther back look toward my camera.
I like the depth created by that narrow entrance. The broad concrete sides act as a natural frame, and the students seem to appear one after another behind the front pair. Windows on the building beyond repeat the rectangular shapes, adding a quieter architectural rhythm around the group.
Black and white keeps the rough walls, pale shirts and darker clothing clearly separated. It also brings attention to differences in posture that could be overlooked in a more general view of the school. I wanted the photograph to hold those small, unscripted variations together. What remains is an ordinary entrance filled with individual expressions, where the common uniform makes each boy’s particular presence more noticeable.
