Tiled Roofs and Narrow Spaces Seen From Above
Looking across these houses in Coonoor, India, I see a landscape made from roofs rather than a single building. Tile, corrugated sheets and patched surfaces overlap at different angles, with narrow spaces opening between the walls. My photograph brings that close arrangement into view, including the small figures visible among the buildings near the lower part of the frame.
The elevated perspective reveals details that would be harder to connect from the lanes below. A roof in the foreground leads towards another behind it, then on to a wall, doorway or small opening. Their uneven edges keep the composition moving. While the houses share the same compact setting, each surface has its own pattern of wear. Some roof sections are regular and clearly lined; others are broken into smaller, less orderly shapes.
I photographed the scene in black and white, where changes in tone help separate those many layers. Dark openings sit beneath bright roofs, and pale walls interrupt the denser textures. The people remain small within that structure, giving a sense of scale without turning the image into a close portrait. What holds my attention is the amount of visible detail within a relatively tight view. There is no broad skyline to pull the eye away: the rooftops, walls and passages remain the whole subject, each connected to the next.
