A Horse And Cart Along A Fenced Village Lane
A horse and cart share a narrow lane with two people in Maramureș, Romania. I photographed the village scene in 2011, keeping the wooden fences, clustered houses, and hillside within the view. In black and white, the road’s light and shadow become a strong path through the everyday setting.
The fences lead inward from both sides of the frame. Their uneven rails repeat along the lane, giving depth to the scene and drawing attention toward the cart. The figures remain relatively small within that structure. I wanted them to belong to the village landscape rather than turn the photograph into a close portrait.
Behind them, rooftops overlap at different heights, and utility poles introduce slender vertical lines. Higher up, the open hillside adds a quieter area beyond the buildings. These ordinary details are important to me because they show a lived-in place, with the road, houses, and surrounding land connected in one composition.
The long shadows across the lane give the foreground its rhythm. They repeat the fence shapes loosely, then break apart as the road turns toward the buildings. Monochrome makes that relationship clearer, bringing wood, gravel, roofs, and grass into a shared range of tones. I see this photograph as an observation of rural daily life rather than a complete story about the people in it. The visible scene has enough character of its own: a cart, a village road, and the landscape continuing behind the homes.
