A Man Among the Flock Before the Royal Palace
Pigeons fill the foreground while a man with a bag stands among them in Amsterdam’s Dam Square. I made this black and white photograph with the Royal Palace behind the scene, keeping the birds close and the building’s repeated windows visible. The early-morning view gave me a lively street moment within a much more orderly architectural setting.
The nearest birds are large enough to show their feather patterns, feet and different poses. Farther away, the flock becomes a denser group around the man. A few pigeons lift their wings or rise above the paving, adding small changes of shape between the birds on the ground. I wanted that activity to remain part of the frame.
The man gives the photograph a human centre. He stands slightly to the right, with a second bag beside his feet and people crossing the square behind him. I have not isolated the encounter from the rest of the city; the walkers and the palace help show how this small gathering belongs to a busy public place.
Across the background, the palace facade repeats its windows and columns in a regular pattern. A section of the neighbouring church appears at the right edge. That stable backdrop makes the irregular flock feel especially immediate. For me, the picture holds the contrast in scale: birds at my feet, a person among them and a large city building beyond.
