Stars and Stripes Within a Bright Blue Doorway
The blue wall caught my eye first. Through its narrow white doorway, an American flag hangs inside a small back room, its red and white stripes falling above a crowded counter. I framed the photograph vertically to keep that view intact, with the bright exterior surrounding the darker space beyond it.
The flag is immediately recognisable, but its setting makes the image more particular. Stools stand beneath the counter, everyday objects gather along its surface, and a mat lies at the threshold. Those details give the photograph the character of a place in use. I wanted the flag to remain part of that ordinary room, with its colour and folds seen among the things already there.
The white trim creates a clear border around the interior. Inside it, shadows soften the edges of the flag and furnishings; outside, the blue wall occupies a large, simple area. I like how that contrast separates two kinds of detail. The wall offers space for the eye to rest, while the doorway invites a closer look.
Red, white, and blue appear in both the symbol and its surroundings, though they are arranged differently on each side of the threshold. That relationship gives the composition a strong visual unity without making it feel staged. This photograph preserves a small scene I noticed in 2019: a familiar flag encountered through a distinctive doorway, where bold colour and everyday life share the same view.
