War of 1812 Reenactment Musket Firing Photography Art
Smoke and Period Clothing in a Close Reenactment View
This photograph follows a reenactor’s raised musket from just behind his shoulder. His hands, the wooden stock and the metal fittings are close and clearly visible, while smoke hangs around the line of the barrel. I made the image during a War of 1812 reenactment, concentrating on a small part of the action rather than a complete view of the event.
A dark fur hat fills the upper right, and the heavy coat provides a textured foreground. Another musket and figure appear more softly behind, placing the subject within a larger scene without distracting from his posture. The close view makes the hands and equipment as important as the clothing, with each material carrying a different surface.
Black and white helps bring those details together. Pale smoke contrasts with the darker hat, the metal catches light, and the wood sits between them in tone. I like the way the photograph holds a brief movement within a dense arrangement of shapes. The smoke is soft and changing, while the musket and the figure’s arms provide firmer lines.
For someone interested in living history and period reenactments, this image offers a close look at the event through its visible detail. It belongs comfortably in a study, home office or room with documentary photography. The subject is a modern reenactment photographed in 2012, and its appeal lies in that meeting of historical costume, present-day participation and a moment caught by the camera.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
