Uncovered Eyes Between Heavy Fabric And A Broad Hat
Only a narrow part of his face is uncovered, yet his gaze holds the whole portrait. I photographed this man in northern China, framing him closely beneath a broad hat and layers of heavy fabric. In black and white, the eyes stand out among the darker folds and dense material surrounding them.
I wanted the composition to stay simple even with so much texture. The hat’s curved brim establishes the upper shape, and the wrapped covering draws attention toward the opening across his face. Round ornaments along the hatband add smaller details without disturbing that clear arrangement.
The fabric has visible fibres and overlapping edges. Below it, a pale, textured collar brings a lighter band into the frame, while a tied cord provides another fine line. The background falls out of focus into soft shapes, keeping the man separate from the setting without removing every trace of it.
What interests me is how immediate a portrait can become with so little of the face visible. The eye contact remains direct, while the covering leaves the rest of the expression open. From a distance, the hat, wrapped fabric and gaze form a strong visual unit. Closer viewing reveals the finer surfaces around the eyes. For me, the photograph’s presence comes from that concentration: a small uncovered area carrying the human connection within a much larger field of texture.
