Abandoned Ontario Living Room With Graffiti Black and White Photography
Broken Blinds and Bold Words Above Floral Wallpaper
“The rich get richer” is written in dark letters on the pale wall of this abandoned living room in rural Ontario. I found the room while photographing in the countryside, and the words became the most direct element in the view. They sit beside a large window with damaged blinds, above a band of patterned wallpaper. I wanted to keep those different parts of the room together, rather than make the lettering a picture on its own.
Daylight enters from the left. Several blind slats are bent or hanging loose, breaking up the otherwise regular horizontal lines. Through the window, a small stretch of the landscape outside remains visible. Inside, the room is empty enough for the wall surfaces to take on most of the visual weight.
The floral wallpaper changes the character of the lower half of the view. Its dense pattern contrasts with the plain wall above, and a torn section near the corner interrupts the repeated shapes. In black and white, I can follow those differences in tone and pattern without colour pulling the scene in another direction.
I do not know who wrote the words or how the room came to be left this way. What I can preserve is the visible meeting of its details: a domestic pattern, damaged window coverings and a message on the wall. The photograph holds those things in the same quiet space, with the light still entering through the window.
