People and Traffic Between Colourful Cuban Facades
There is no single person carrying this scene. People gather along both pavements, bicycles move through the road, and older cars share the street with smaller vehicles. I photographed this view in Cardenas, Matanzas, Cuba, where the activity and the colourful buildings needed to be seen together.
On the left, a row of columns creates a shaded edge above a red base. Opposite it, blue-and-white walls and tall openings give the street another strong rhythm. A turquoise corner building draws the eye farther into the frame. The road runs between these different facades and narrows toward the distance, gathering the scattered movement into one composition.
I like how much the photograph lets you discover without making any detail feel separate from the street. A pale classic car approaches near the centre, a darker car sits to the right, and a red-canopied vehicle occupies the nearer edge. People pause close to the buildings while others continue along the road. Their presence gives scale to the columns, windows, and doorways.
The overcast sky keeps the colour from becoming harsh. Reds and blues remain distinct, but the scene reads first as everyday city life rather than a display of painted architecture. This is the Cardenas I wanted to hold in the frame: several kinds of movement happening at once, with the buildings providing continuity around them. The photograph records a street in use, where the interest is in the whole scene rather than a single landmark.
