A Fishing Supplies Sign Above a Quiet Entrance
The small sign above the entrance makes this building near Lake Nipigon more than a study of a plain façade. Minnows, worms, ice and tackle are among the words still visible there. I photographed the building associated with Lake Nipigon Fishing Charters in Ontario, keeping its broad front and the roofline together. The sign gives the view a specific connection to fishing without needing a boat or a lake within the frame.
A large garage door occupies the left side, while the smaller entrance and window sit to the right. I like the different proportions of those openings against the pale wall. Above them, darker vertical boards fill the triangular gable beneath the roof. Their texture contrasts with the quieter lower surface. The view is largely frontal, so these simple shapes remain clear, while weeds at the base interrupt the straight meeting of wall and ground.
Utility wires cross the sky behind the building, and a tall narrow structure rises above the roof. I included that surrounding detail because it belongs to the place as I found it. In black and white, the darker roof, doorway and window stand apart from the bright façade and sky. My attention returns to the sign after following those larger forms. It holds a small list of practical supplies within a photograph of an ordinary building, giving the scene its particular character.
