Lake Nipigon Abandoned Charter Boat Black and White Photography
A Weathered Fishing Boat Resting in Tall Grass
The words “Lake Nipigon Fishing Charters” are still visible on the cabin of this boat, although it now rests on land among tall grasses. I photographed it near Lake Nipigon in Ontario, Canada. Its raised bow, low hull and pale cabin remain easy to read against the surrounding buildings. The lettering gives the vessel a particular identity within a scene whose most immediate details are weathering and overgrowth.
I kept the boat within its surroundings rather than isolating it completely. Low buildings stand behind it, and utility poles carry wires across the upper right part of the view. A slender mast rises into the pale sky. I like how those vertical and diagonal lines relate to the longer curve of the hull below them. The grass hides some of the boat’s lower edge, while patches of bare ground and small plants occupy the foreground. In black and white, the cabin’s light surface stands apart from the darker, mottled hull.
What drew me to the scene was that meeting of a recognisable working shape and its present setting. The photograph cannot tell me all the trips the boat made or why it was left here. It can retain the visible signs of its former purpose alongside the details around it now. I wanted the image to allow both kinds of looking: reading the large words on the cabin, then noticing the smaller textures of the hull, grass and quiet buildings beyond.
