A Green Shirt and a Grin Against Deep Shadow
A smiling boy leans into the light at a doorway in India, his green shirt gathered below his shoulders. I photographed the moment in colour, keeping the pale wall and dark interior as a simple frame around him. A second child appears lower in the doorway, partly within the shadow, adding another visible layer to the brief encounter.
I was walking through a narrow neighbourhood lane when the doorway caught my attention. The exterior light fell softly across the opening, leaving the room behind much darker. Then the boy leaned out and turned toward my camera with a broad grin. I made the photograph without directing him, during the few seconds the scene held together. His tilted head and outstretched hand gave the frame a lively shape, while the bright fabric introduced the strongest colour against the otherwise subdued setting.
What I enjoy is the way the light keeps the face clear even within such a dark background. The small highlights in the eyes, the curve of the smile, and the folds of the green shirt provide enough detail to hold the portrait together. I left the second child visible because that small presence belongs to the encounter as I saw it. For someone drawn to travel portraits or spontaneous street photography, this image preserves a moment from my 2010 travels through India. It brings me back to noticing the doorway first, then finding the photograph in the person who appeared within it, with the surrounding light and colour already in place.
