A Raised Hoof and Driver Beneath Sunlit Street Facades
A horse drawn carriage moves toward me along a street in Trinidad, Cuba. The horse steps through a broad patch of sunlight, while the driver sits behind it in a patterned shirt and hat. I photographed this scene in 2009, keeping the carriage within the surrounding street because the buildings and smaller activities matter to the image as much as the approaching subject.
I chose black and white for the strong light, deep shadows and pale walls. The raised hoof gives the scene a clear sense of movement, and the carriage’s shadow stretches beside it on the road. I like how those shapes relate to the larger shadow cast by the buildings. Barred windows, weathered facades and overhead wires lead farther into the view, with a few people appearing in the distance. The horse and driver remain the point of attention, but the space around them lets the photograph describe a wider piece of everyday life.
What holds me here is that balance between motion and architecture. The carriage comes forward, the street recedes, and the repeated doors and windows give the scene its structure. Nothing needed to be staged; the arrangement came from watching those relationships while the street was still moving. On a wall, I see this photograph appealing to an interest in Cuba, documentary street imagery or traditional transport within its setting. The monochrome palette keeps the composition clear, while the horse, driver and layers of buildings provide details to return to.
