Small Objects Behind Glass Above a Dense Front Shrub
The two main windows are what caught my attention at this house in Schreiber, Ontario. Both are filled with objects visible behind the glass, creating small, densely detailed areas within an otherwise straightforward façade. I photographed the home from across the street, keeping the low roof, chimney, lawn and front shrub within the square frame.
From a distance, the house has a simple arrangement. Horizontal siding runs across the lower wall, the roof makes a broad dark band and two basement windows sit close to the ground. The front shrub spreads beneath the projecting section on the right, adding a softer shape to those straight edges. A neighbouring entrance appears at the side of the composition.
Looking more closely changes the experience of the image. Lamps, containers and other small objects overlap within the main window openings, where their shapes contrast with the plain siding around them. I found that difference intriguing: the outside view gives only a limited glimpse into the rooms, yet it is enough to make those windows the centre of my photograph.
Black and white keeps the house and its surroundings connected through tone and texture. The print would appeal to someone who enjoys everyday Canadian architecture and the small details that distinguish one home from another. The sky and lawn provide quieter areas around the façade, leaving room to explore the windows without losing the larger street-level view.
