Ganzi Highway Standstill With Freight Trucks Black and White Photography
One Man In The Narrow Space Between Stopped Trucks
A highway accident interrupted our journey toward Tibet for several hours. We were travelling through the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan, China, when traffic stopped on the two-lane road. I got out and began walking, photographing around the small town and among the rows of stationary freight trucks.
This black and white image came from that unplanned pause. The trucks crowd both sides of the frame, leaving a narrow strip of wet pavement between them. One man stands in that space, turning partly toward my camera. His smaller figure gives the surrounding vehicles their scale.
I was drawn to the way the road becomes a corridor. Large tires, metal panels, mirrors and tied tarpaulins repeat into the distance, while the centre line guides the eye past the man. The canvas folds and ropes bring finer texture to the trucks’ much larger shapes.
The vertical composition reinforces the sense of enclosure without losing the open route through the scene. Black and white brings the pavement, reflections and mechanical surfaces together, with the figure remaining easy to find. What stays with me is how a delay changed the journey for a few hours. Walking through the stopped traffic revealed a photograph I would have missed from inside the vehicle, with one ordinary human moment held among the trucks.
