A Line of Hanging Lamps Above Two Walking Figures
A line of hanging lamps seems to run almost endlessly into the dark. Beneath it, two men walk towards my camera, small within a street lined by tall buildings and illuminated signs. I like the way this black and white photograph lets the lights establish the setting before the figures become the focus. The grain is part of its character, softening the distant details while leaving the nearer shapes clear enough to hold attention.
The paving carries its own pattern of narrow parallel lines. Light catches that surface in pale patches, bringing the foreground towards the viewer and connecting it with the smaller pools of brightness farther along the street. The men stand out against those lighter areas, one slightly ahead of the other. Their clothing and bags give the scene everyday detail, while cars, shop signs and other figures remain part of the surroundings. I photographed the scene in 2011, keeping the street’s depth visible around the people.
What holds the composition together for me is the changing scale of the lamps. The nearest is large and bright, while the others become progressively smaller above the narrowing street. Dark building fronts enclose that line on either side. At ground level, the two men add a different rhythm through their walking postures. I wanted the photograph to keep both qualities in view: the ordered repetition of the lights and the passing human moment beneath them. It is a night scene I can return to through its shapes, texture and small points of brightness.
