Times Square Woman and Night Traffic Black and White Photography

A Still Figure Beneath Signs And Streaming Traffic

This was one of my first street photographs, made in Times Square in 2005. Among the illuminated signs and passing traffic, an older woman stood at the street’s edge with her back to me. Her pale hair and long dark coat gave this black and white night scene a quieter point of attention.

I was beginning to recognise how much a single person could change a busy city photograph. Seen from behind, she remains unidentified, but her presence gives the street a human scale. The large advertising panels above and the moving vehicles beside her make that contrast especially clear.

The longer exposure turns traffic into streaks of light and blurred shapes. Buildings and signs remain comparatively fixed, including the large Virgin lettering and the Loews Theatres sign. Those visible details are part of the photograph’s particular time and place, preserving the Times Square I encountered that night.

I like the way the vertical frame lets the city rise above the figure. Her silhouette anchors the foreground, while the traffic carries the eye into the brighter distance. Black and white brings the signs, coat, hair and headlights into one strong tonal arrangement. From across a room, the contrast and motion are immediate; closer viewing reveals the lettering and street details. The photograph still reminds me of discovering how an ordinary pedestrian could become the centre of a city scene.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
