Two Seated Figures Beneath a Heavy Wooden Door
Two men sit on a step in Trinidad, Cuba, each with a cigar beneath the brim of a hat. I photographed them in black and white against a heavy wooden door, keeping the pale walls and worn steps around them in the frame. A small birdcage rests between the feet of the man on the right, adding a distinctive detail close to the foreground.
I noticed the scene while walking through Trinidad during my travels in Cuba. I paused and watched until the figures and surrounding doorway formed a frame that felt balanced. The man on the left looks downward, with his light shirt standing out against the darker door. The man on the right faces toward the street, his arms lowered beside his knees and the cage. Their different positions gave the photograph a natural asymmetry within the otherwise orderly setting of the door panels and steps.
What holds my attention is the way the people and textures work together. The hats, clothing, cigars, and hands remain clear, while the wood grain and marked plaster provide a detailed background. Monochrome keeps the faces prominent and lets the lighter surfaces create space around the darker shapes. For someone drawn to Cuban street photography or documentary portraits, this image offers a particular moment encountered on foot rather than a broad view of the town. I like that the scene can be read simply at first, then studied through smaller details: a lowered glance, a hand against the cage, and the contrast between the two seated figures.
