Larung Gar Young Monk at the Window Black and White Portrait Photography
A Brief Glance Between Striped Curtain and Carved Wood
A young monk looks out from behind a striped curtain at Larung Gar in China. I photographed the brief encounter in black and white, keeping the worn wooden frame, decorative carved strip, and sandals on the ledge within the view. The face occupies only a small part of the image, but its light against the darker interior makes it the centre of attention.
I was walking through Larung Gar when I noticed the curtain move beside one of the monastery buildings. The monk stepped forward and pushed it aside enough to look out, pausing with a hand against the wooden frame. I made the photograph as that moment appeared, with no request for a pose. The soft directional light revealed the face and fabric while leaving the space behind in shadow. I kept the tall curtain and surrounding wood in the composition because they show how this glance emerged from the place itself.
The repeated stripes and carved patterns give the portrait a strong framework without overwhelming the person within it. In monochrome, the curtain becomes a sequence of pale and dark lines, while the weathered surface of the wood holds smaller variations. I like the contrast between those steady patterns and the brief human encounter they surround. For someone drawn to travel portraits or documentary photography, this image preserves a particular moment from my 2015 travels in China. The details remain closely connected: the hand on the frame, the folds of clothing, the sandals below, and the glance that made me stop with my camera.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
