Cameras Gather Around a Speaker With a Megaphone

A crowd gathers around a seated speaker holding a megaphone during Toronto’s 2010 G20 protests. I photographed the downtown scene in black and white, keeping the people with cameras, the standing onlookers, and the surrounding street within the frame. A sheet of paper near the speaker gives the central activity a small, clear detail amid the many faces and overlapping figures.

I made the image while moving through downtown Toronto and observing how groups formed throughout the day. Here, the gathering had become compact enough that people at different heights created a layered composition. Those crouching or sitting with cameras occupy the foreground, while a row of standing figures closes the space behind them. I was drawn to the different directions of their gazes and the way the camera lenses pointed toward the same part of the circle. The buildings remain visible at the back, giving the moment its urban setting.

Monochrome helps the faces, hands, and equipment remain readable within a busy scene. The lighter shirts and highlights on the cameras create small points of contrast among the darker clothing, while the speaker stays connected to the crowd rather than appearing alone. For someone drawn to documentary street photography or Toronto’s public life, this photograph records a particular gathering during the protests. What holds my attention is the arrangement of people around a shared point of focus, and the number of small gestures that can coexist within one frame. It is a moment I encountered on the street in 2010, preserved through the people and details that were there.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
