A Hand Holds the Page Beside a Small Bell

Seen from behind, the young monk leans toward the open pages on a low table. I made this photograph in Bylakuppe, India, in 2010, drawn to the quiet concentration of the study moment. One hand rests at the edge of a lifted page, and a small bell stands beside the book. The close view keeps his posture and the objects immediately around him at the centre of the scene.

I like how the composition leads toward the text without showing the boy’s face. His dark robe forms a broad shape on the right, while the pale pages open across the lower left. The curve of his head and the angle of his arm guide the eye toward the table. That arrangement lets the act of reading carry the photograph through a simple gesture.

Black and white brings out the different surfaces. The robe has soft folds, the table shows worn edges, and the bell catches small highlights. Beyond them, the patterned floor stretches into the room with larger bands of light and shade. Those details add context while leaving the open book as the main point of attention.

Watching this moment, I was struck by the power of a quiet scene of learning. The photograph can bring that reflective quality into a study, reading space or room with an interest in travel and everyday human experiences. For me, its meaning rests in the visible relationship between a young reader, a page and the small space arranged around the work of study.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
