Engraved Names and Personal Tributes Beneath the Stone Monument

The engraved names and ages are the centre of this photograph of the Bloody Sunday Memorial in Derry, Northern Ireland. They keep my attention on the individuals being remembered. Below the stone inscription, candles, photographs and small crosses form a close row of personal tributes, bringing a different scale and texture to the monument.

I photographed the memorial in 2019, showing it within its surroundings rather than isolating the lettering alone. Pavement fills the lower edge, shrubs grow behind the base and neighbouring buildings remain visible on either side. Clouds give the background a softer surface against the heavy stone. The square frame holds those ordinary urban details around a subject that carries particular weight.

The inscription identifies Bloody Sunday, 30 January 1972. In the photograph, the names, ages and tributes make that reference specific and personal. I composed the view almost straight on, allowing the broad engraved section and the rising stone above it to establish a clear central structure. The smaller objects at the base invite a closer look without taking attention away from the names.

Black and white felt appropriate to my view of this memorial. It keeps the lettering legible and gives the stone, photographs and candles a shared tonal language. This documentary print would appeal to someone interested in Northern Ireland and places of remembrance, where the subject deserves time and attention beyond its architectural form.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
