An Early Morning Portrait Beneath an Illuminated Shop Sign

Before dawn, Hanoi gave me a different kind of street encounter. During my first three mornings in Vietnam, I went out early without a particular destination, looking at the city before the busiest hours. I made this black and white photograph in 2026, finding an older bearded man seated beside a food cart.

His face and long pale beard caught my attention within the darker storefront. He looks toward the camera, with his hands held near his waist and his legs extending toward the pavement. I kept the full seated figure in the frame rather than moving in for a close facial portrait. The setting is part of what makes this encounter specific.

An illuminated sign hangs above him, and the closed shutter behind supplies a repeated pattern. A small plastic stool sits in front of the chair, while the cart creates a larger dark shape to the left. The narrow doorway and pavement continue into shadow at the right. These elements surround the man without obscuring his presence.

I converted the image to monochrome because the face, posture and changes in light mattered more to me than the street's colours. Going out at that hour let me spend time with scenes beyond the city's familiar landmarks. This portrait preserves one of those quieter views: a person looking back at the camera, with the food cart and shutter keeping the early morning street around him.
