White Roses Across a Rear Window on a London Street
White roses lie across the rear shelf of a London black cab, their pale flowers clearly visible through the window. I noticed the scene during a walk through the city and photographed the car from behind, keeping the surrounding street in view. The flowers gave a familiar London vehicle an unexpected detail worth stopping for.
The cab fills the lower centre of the frame. Its rounded roof and rear window hold the flowers within a strong outline, while reflections of nearby buildings bend across the glossy bodywork. I like how the photograph contains the city in two ways: directly in the street behind the car, and indirectly in those distorted reflections.
On the right, a bus occupies a narrow part of the view, bringing another dark surface close to the taxi. Buildings and shopfronts continue along the left, with signs and upper facades leading into the distance. The framing keeps that urban setting present without losing the smaller subject inside the rear window.
The roses remain the detail that makes the image particular. I cannot tell from the photograph why they were there, but their shape and light tone stand apart from the car’s darker surfaces. Black and white brings that relationship forward, connecting the flowers to the surrounding highlights while letting their forms remain distinct. Made in 2013, the image preserves a small moment of London street life in which an ordinary cab carried something visually unexpected.
