Golden Leaves Cover the Ground Beneath Tall Woodland Trees
Gold fills this corner of the forest, from the leaves overhead to the carpet underfoot. A broad opening leads between the trees, drawing the eye into the woodland rather than stopping it at the first trunks. I made this colour photograph in Northern Ontario at the height of autumn, when the ground and canopy seemed to share the same warm palette.
The upright trees give the scene its structure. Some trunks are dark and deeply textured; others are slender and pale, appearing farther back among the leaves. Between them, small branches and patches of remaining green keep the forest from becoming a single field of yellow.
I like the way the foreground makes the view feel approachable. Fallen leaves spread across the open ground, while low rocks and roots remain near its edges. That space lets the taller trees rise clearly against the dense layers behind. The photograph invites a slower look at the woodland’s arrangement, beyond the immediate autumn colour.
Warm yellow, ochre and brown dominate, with brighter foliage catching the light higher in the frame. Nothing in the view depends on a distant landmark or an expansive sky. The forest itself is the whole setting.
For me, the strength of this image lies in that enclosure: a familiar Canadian autumn scene, full of colour yet held together by the quiet vertical rhythm of the trees.
