Turquoise Geothermal River Cutting Through Icelandic Mineral Earth

One of the things that continually surprises me about Iceland is how often the landscape stops looking like a place and starts looking like abstract art. In the geothermal regions surrounding Lake Mývatn in northern Iceland, the earth is constantly being reshaped by heat, minerals, and underground water. The result is a surface that feels alive with color, movement, and texture.

This aerial photograph captures a narrow geothermal channel flowing through mineral-stained ground, forming what looks almost like a river of turquoise paint spilling across the volcanic earth. The water winds through the frame, branching and merging in delicate streams before narrowing again at the bottom of the image. From above, the shape feels almost organic, like the veins of a leaf or the roots of a tree spreading through the soil.

What fascinated me most about this formation was the contrast between the cool blues of the geothermal water and the warm tones of the surrounding mineral landscape. Iron and sulfur deposits stain the ground in shades of deep orange, rust, and pale gold. Where the hot water moves through the earth, the colors shift dramatically, revealing layers of minerals reacting to the heat below the surface.

Photographing this scene from the air completely changes how the landscape reveals itself. Standing at ground level, you would only see fragments of these colors and textures. But from above, the patterns become clear. The turquoise channel forms a natural pathway through the frame, pulling the viewer’s eye from the bottom of the image upward into a complex network of mineral textures and subtle color transitions.

I photographed this while flying my drone over the geothermal fields near Lake Mývatn, one of the most geologically active areas in Iceland. It’s a landscape shaped by volcanic forces that have been building beneath the island for thousands of years. Steam vents, bubbling pools, and mineral deposits are scattered across the terrain, creating an environment that feels both ancient and constantly changing.

I personally sign each limited-edition print of this photograph and include a certificate of authenticity confirming its place in the edition. The print is produced using archival pigment inks on museum-quality materials to preserve the rich color gradients and intricate textures captured in the original aerial photograph.

Because of its flowing composition and strong color contrast, this image works beautifully in modern interiors where color and movement play an important role in the design of the space. The turquoise channel provides a striking focal point while the surrounding mineral tones bring warmth and depth to the overall composition.
