North American Coniferous and Hardwood Forest

This fine art limited edition photograph features sugar maple trees dominated by lush green leaves in the dense forest. The Sugar Maple (Acer saccharum) is a sizable, slowly-growing deciduous tree that thrives in Northern Ontario's well-drained soil. Canada's national tree, symbolized by the maple leaf on its flag, is the sugar maple, which is also New York's state tree.

It is estimated that thousands of hectares of old-growth forest exist in Ontario's closed-canopy forests, which are dominated by hemlock, yellow birch, and sugar maple. Algonquin Provincial Park has a unique ecosystem, placed between the more common coniferous woods of the north and the more common deciduous forests of the south. As a result, the Park is home to both types of forests and five distinct habitats that attract a wide range of flora and fauna.
