Officers Form A Repeating Line Across The Street

A long line of police officers stretches through this black and white photograph from the G20 Summit in Toronto. What first catches my eye is the repetition. Caps, shoulders, equipment, hands, and faces form a visual rhythm that begins large in the foreground and steadily compresses as the line disappears toward the background.

I framed the photograph from an angle that lets perspective do much of the work. The closest officers are partially cropped and slightly softer, while the central figures carry greater visual definition. From there, the formation narrows into the distance. That change in scale gives the photograph depth while emphasizing just how many officers were assembled along the street.

The black and white treatment strips away competing color and puts more attention on expression, uniform detail, body language, and the repeating geometry of the police line. Several officers look forward while others glance to the side, creating small variations within what is otherwise a highly ordered formation. Photographers and other people can be seen beyond the officers, adding another layer to the urban scene without taking attention away from the central subject.
