A Face Emerging Through Condensation And Shadow

A man appears through a condensation-covered window, pushed almost entirely to the right edge of the frame. His glasses, eye, nose, and part of his face remain visible, but the wet textured glass interrupts almost everything else. The rest of the photograph is remarkably spare: a broad field of gray, streaked moisture and surface texture, bordered by deep black structural lines along the right and bottom.

I made this photograph in Toronto, and what interests me most is how little information is actually needed for the human presence to take over the image. The face occupies only a small part of the square composition, yet my eye keeps returning to it. The obscured view creates distance while still allowing just enough expression and detail to remain personal. It fits naturally within my black and white street photography, where fleeting people, gestures, surfaces, and unexpected visual barriers often become the entire photograph.

The window is as important as the man behind it. Condensation softens his features while leaving the glass itself remarkably tactile. Tiny droplets, streaks, uneven patches, and darker marks spread across the surface, creating layers between the viewer and the subject. Rather than trying to see through the glass cleanly, I like the way the photograph asks me to look at both things simultaneously—the physical window and the person beyond it.

The black-and-white treatment keeps the image concentrated on texture, tone, shape, and isolation. The large negative space to the left gives the photograph much of its tension. Nothing competes directly with the face, yet the subject never feels conventionally centered or presented. He seems to emerge from the gray surface almost reluctantly.

I offer this photograph as a limited edition of only 10 prints. Each print is produced with archival pigment inks on premium archival paper, personally signed by me, and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

As wall art, I see this working particularly well in contemporary, minimalist, industrial, or darker interiors where the restrained tonal range can hold its own without becoming decorative noise. Collectors drawn to anonymous urban moments, unconventional portraiture, and photographs with a quieter psychological edge may also connect with it.
